If you’re looking to convert your old bike into an electric bike, a mid-drive motor kit is a great option to consider. In this build series, we’ll be using the Tongsheng TSDZ2 mid-drive motor kit to turn a donor bike into an electric bike.
In the first part of the series, we went through the instruction booklet and fitted the motor to the bike. In this article, we’ll be picking up from where we left off and taking you through the steps to finish building your electric bike.

Gear Shifter Cable
The first thing we need to do is sort out the gear shifter cable. To do this, we first need to remove the hand grips. This can be a bit stubborn, but the easiest way to do it is to push a screwdriver between the hand grip and the handlebars and wiggle it off. Next, we need to loosen the brake cables so that we can disconnect them from the levers. We then remove the brake levers from the handlebars.

Screen
Next, we’ll be fixing the screen. To do this, we’ll need to loosen the fixing bolts with an allen key and attach the screen to the center of the handlebars. We then attach the brake cables to the new brake levers and run the new shift cable housing down the bike, threading the new cable through the housing and attaching it to the derailleur.

We then lubricate the handlebars to make it easier to get the hand grips on again and tighten everything up. We also neaten up the cables with a cable tie and connect the motor up to the screen.

Battery
Finally, it’s time to think about where to put the battery. The best place is usually in a space that’s perfect for batteries, such as where water bottle bolts are typically used. However, if this isn’t possible, there are two other options: to put another hole in the battery mount or to put another hole in the frame. However, drilling a hole in the frame can weaken it, so it’s best to avoid this if possible.
In this article, we’ve taken you through the steps to finish building your electric bike using the Tongsheng TSDZ2 mid-drive motor kit. With a little bit of patience and careful attention to detail, you’ll have a fully functional electric bike in no time!
