The Jack and Jill Shower Problem

DIY

Introduction

As a DIY fan and landlord, I recently took on another property that has a jack and jill shower. For those who may not know, a jack and jill shower is a shower with two doors leading to two separate rooms.

The Challenges

There are two challenges that need to be solved for this type of shower: security and privacy.

The security aspect has already been addressed by the previous landlord by adding thumb locks on the room side of the doors. However, the privacy aspect has not been addressed yet. If two people who don’t know each other are in the two rooms, they need reassurance that the other person won’t come into the shower while they’re using it.

The Solution

To solve this problem, I came up with the solution of using electrical door locks. The door locks need to be fail-safe, meaning that if the power fails, the doors should unlock automatically to prevent anyone from getting locked in during a power cut. I found reasonably priced electromagnetic door locks online that are 12 volts, which is important because the shower is in a bathroom and needs to be low voltage.

The plan is to have one of these locks on each door frame and have a pull switch control them. When one of the tenants goes into the shower, they pull the cord, and the light comes on, which activates the electromagnets and locks both doors. However, there is a chance that someone could forget to turn off the lock after using the shower, which could result in both doors being locked without anyone in the shower room.

To prevent this from happening, I considered various options, such as putting switches on the doors, but I still wasn’t satisfied with the solution. Ultimately, I came up with a solution that uses motion detectors in the shower room. When the motion detectors detect that there is no movement in the shower room, they will automatically turn off the lock.

In conclusion, I believe that this solution solves the privacy issue while also ensuring safety and security. I hope this video provides you with some inspiration and ideas for your own projects.
